The Shushed Friar Liqueur is a fortified wine made from hand‑picked grapes from the Alcobaça region. The grapes are fermented and then fortified with grape brandy, after which the wine is aged for a long period in large Portuguese oak barrels. Its golden amber color is complemented by notes of dried fruit, honey, and a subtle hint of orange peel. On the palate it is very velvety, well balanced, and leaves a long, pleasant finish. The Alcobaça Cooperative Winery was founded in 1956 by a group of small and medium‑scale growers in the area. Its creation was driven by the need to establish a structure that would allow producers to sell their wine at a fairer price. The cooperative began with 3,000 members, but the number gradually declined as people left the vineyards. Today the winery has 382 members and produces a wide range of wines, including reds, whites, rosés, sparkling wines, and liqueurs. Its wines are sold throughout the country and also exported to several other countries. (Illustrative image only)
