It is said that the principal mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe where it was regarded as a refined delicacy, even used as perfume for the veils of court ladies. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image shown.
