It is said that the Mentor of Madeira Wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑fifteenth century, Madeira Wine was already being exported, with trade routes reaching Europe, where it was regarded as a refined delicacy—so refined, in fact, that it was even used as a perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that it frequently appears in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown. (Illustrative image)
