It is said that Prince Henry was the chief mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved highly successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira was already being exported across Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The nectar’s prestige was such that references to it appear frequently in history, art and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown. (illustration only)
