It is said that Madeira wine’s principal mentor was Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, which proved a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was considered a mark of the utmost refinement, even being used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court.
