Description

It is said that Madeira wine’s principal mentor was Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, which proved a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was considered a mark of the utmost refinement, even being used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are not uncommon in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
