Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On the island, vineyards are cultivated in small earth plots called “poios,” supported by earth walls on the often inaccessible mountain slopes. The unique soil and climate of Madeira, together with its production process and the grape varieties grown, have given the wine an unrivalled distinction over the ages. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are employed in the production of this liqueur-like wine, the most prestigious being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
