The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vineyards are grown in small earth plots known as "poios", supported by earth walls on the slopes of the mountains, often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unparalleled distinction over the ages. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are highlighted for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
