The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On the island of Madeira, vines are cultivated in small plots of land called “poios”, supported by earth walls on steep mountain slopes that are often hard to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unrivaled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
