Very few producers, especially in Madeira wine production, have experienced a revolution as profound as Barbeito’s. Becoming a bulk wine supplier and, almost overnight, a benchmark in the Madeira region is a remarkable feat, given the fierce competition at the time. In 1991, Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, turned Barbeito into one of the most important Madeira wine producers. That same year marked a pivotal change: for the first time, wine production was handled by a family member. Two years later, Ricardo completed his first harvest without external oversight, laying the groundwork for a team united by a single credo—producing quality wines with a distinctive style.
