Very few producers—especially in Madeira wine production—have experienced a revolution as sweeping as the one that took place at Barbeito. To be a bulk wine supplier and, overnight, become a benchmark in the Madeira wine region is a remarkable feat, given the fierce competition at the time. All began in 1991, when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita, turned Barbeito into one of Madeira’s most prominent wine producers. That same year, the company made another significant shift: for the first time, wine production was entrusted to a family member. Two years later, Ricardo carried out his first harvest without external oversight, laying the groundwork for a team that shares the motto: to make quality wines with their own style.
