Very few producers, especially in Madeira wine production, find in their history a revolution as significant as the one that happened with Barbeito. To go from a bulk wine supplier to becoming a reference in the Madeira wine region in an instant is a tremendous achievement, given the strong competitors at the time. Everything happened in 1991, when Ricardo Freitas joined the family company and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita, decided to transform Barbeito into one of the most important Madeira wine producers. That same year another major change took place: for the first time, wine production became the responsibility of a family member. Two years after Ricardo joined the company, he harvested his first crop without external assistance, thereby setting the stage for building a team whose members all share the same motto—producing quality wines with a distinctive style.
