Very few producers—especially in Madeira wine production—experience a revolution as profound as the one that took place with Barbeito. To go from being a bulk wine supplier to becoming a benchmark in the Madeira region overnight is a remarkable feat, given the stiff competition at the time. It all began in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, turned Barbeito into one of Madeira’s most important wine producers. That same year a pivotal change occurred: for the first time, wine production was entrusted to a family member. Two years later, Ricardo harvested his first crop without external oversight, establishing a team united by the motto “produce quality wines with a distinctive style.” The bottling year may not match the illustrative image presented.
