Description

It is said that the Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Prince Henry, who encouraged the cultivation of the white Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑fifteenth century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe where it was prized for its refinement, even coming to be used as perfume for the court ladies’ scarves. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
