Description

Legend has it that the Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Prince Henry, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originating from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe where it was prized for its refinement—so much so that it was even used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that it frequently appears in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not match the picture shown. (illustrative image only)
