It is said that the main mentor of Madeira wine was Prince Dom Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originating from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, and this proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as a refined delicacy and even used as a perfume for the ladies’ scarves in the court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
