It is said that Infante D. Henrique was the principal mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar is such that references to it appear frequently in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
