It is said that the chief mentor of Madeira wine was Prince D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as the most refined and even used as perfume for the handkerchiefs of court ladies. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented.
