Description

It is said that the chief mentor of Madeira wine was Prince D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of Malvasia Cândida, a variety from Candia on Crete, on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was considered a refined beverage—so much so that it even served as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, art, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (Illustrative image only)
