The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On Madeira, vineyards are cultivated in small earth terraces known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of the island, as well as the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unrivalled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are still used for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
