Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years. On Madeira, vines are grown in small terraced plots—known locally as “poios”—supported by earthen walls on steep, often hard‑to‑reach slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and grape varieties, have given Madeira its unrivaled distinction over time. Around 30 grape varieties are used to craft this fortified wine, the most prized being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
