The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports, 25 years after its discovery. On the island of Madeira, vineyards are cultivated in small plots of earth, known as "poios," supported by earthen walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of Madeira, as well as the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unrivaled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are highlighted for the production of this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
