The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the slopes of the mountains, often in hard‑to‑reach areas. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and the grapes grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unmatched distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are highlighted for producing this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
