Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth terraces known as “poios”, supported by earthen walls on steep mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivalled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
