The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island’s discovery, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On Madeira, vineyards are cultivated in small earth‑pit plots called “poios,” supported by earthen walls on often difficult‑to‑reach mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil, climate, production methods, and grape varieties have given Madeira its unrivaled distinction over time.
