The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating to 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth terraces called “poios”, supported by stone walls on steep, often inaccessible mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil, climate, production methods and grape varieties have given Madeira its unparalleled distinction over time. Thirty varieties are highlighted for this fortified wine, with the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia—though the bottling year may not match the accompanying illustration.
