Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating to 25 years after that discovery. On the island of Madeira, vineyards are grown in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unrivaled distinction of Madeira wine over the centuries. In addition to these factors, up to 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
