It is said that the principal mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as a perfume for the ladies’ gloves at court.
