The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small earth troughs called “poios,” supported by stone walls on steep, often inaccessible mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with its production process and the grape varieties grown, have given Madeira wine its unrivalled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used in making this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
