It is said that Prince Henry was the main mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Candida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira – a move that proved very successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as a finer product and even used as perfume for the ladies’ scarves at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of some nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
