The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, vineyards are cultivated in small earth troughs known as “poios,” supported by earthen walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of Madeira, as well as the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unrivaled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used for producing this liqueur wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
