Description

It is said that the primary mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originating from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, and this proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as a refined beverage and was even used as a perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it appear frequently in history, art, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not match the image presented.
