It is said that the main mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as the epitome of refinement and even used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court.
