Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years after the island was found. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth enclosures called “poios,” supported by earthen walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with the production process and the varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivalled distinction over time. Beyond these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most prized being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
