Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small earth plots known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the steep mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivaled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used for this fortified wine, with the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
