It is said that the Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Candida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a move that proved highly successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that reached Europe, where it was regarded as a drink of fine distinction; it even found use as a perfume for the court ladies’ scarves. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it abound in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
