The Manz family moved to the quiet village of Cheleiros, in western Portugal, in 2004 and quickly fell in love with the people and the place. The region’s winemaking heritage, with its pastoral scenery and lost traditions, quickly captivated André Manz, who, with help and advice from locals, decided to try making wine for personal consumption. After identifying the varieties that would be planted in a forgotten vineyard tucked within an orchard, he discovered that one of the varieties was practically extinct in Portugal: Jampal. Very few producers currently bet on this grape, given its low profitability, but André Manz chose not to follow anyone’s footsteps but his own. Today, his business expansion already spans three wine regions—Douro, Lisbon, and the Setúbal Peninsula—and reaches 25 countries. (Illustrative image only)
