In the mid‑19th century, José Junqueiro Júnior—father of the poet Guerra Junqueiro—acquired a group of estates and properties in the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta in the Upper Douro. The vast majority of those holdings remain in the possession of his direct descendants to this day. An old white‑vineyard planted by this ancestor at the end of the 19th century is still in production, giving rise to the Maritávora Grande Reserva Vinhas Velhas Branco. (Illustrative image only)
