The origin of the winemaking company Marqués de Murrieta is also the starting point of the Rioja region itself. Don Luciano Murrieta, a visionary with a deep passion for wine, applied the techniques he had learned in Bordeaux, producing the first Rioja wine in 1852 with the aim of ensuring its longevity. Years later, in 1870, he moved his business to Castelo Ygay, where the story of this remarkable, historic, and worldwide‑renowned producer truly begins; the Marqués de Murrieta headquarters was declared a museum in 2019. The estate is surrounded by 300 hectares of fertile land ideal for vine cultivation, and in 2011 it embraced a renovation project incorporating the latest enological technology that sets it apart.
