The origin of the winery Marqués de Murrieta is also the starting point of the existence of the Rioja region. Don Luciano Murrieta, a visionary man devoted to his greatest passion for wine, applied the techniques he had learned in Bordeaux, producing the first Rioja wine in 1852 with the aim of preserving it for future generations. Years later, in 1870, he moved to the Castle Ygay together with his business, and it is here that the story of this incredible, historic, and globally recognized producer begins. The Marqués de Murrieta headquarters were declared a museum in 2019. The estate is surrounded by 300 hectares of fertile land, ideal for vine cultivation, and in 2011 it launched a renovation project that incorporated the latest enological technology into the values that make it unique.
