The company was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, who managed it until 1973. Today the Messias family still oversees the administration of Caves Messias. Since its inception, Messias has produced and marketed wines from the main demarcated regions: Dão, Bairrada, Douro, Vinho Verde, Beiras and Port Wine. The company is also renowned for the high quality of its natural sparkling wines and aguardentes. Its headquarters are in Mealhada, a small town in the Bairrada region, where it owns 160 hectares of vines, of which 70 hectares are dedicated to producing the prestigious wines of Quinta do Valdoeiro. In Ferradosa, in the Douro Valley, it has 200 hectares, of which 130 hectares are planted with vines for the production of Port Wine and Douro wine at Quinta do Cachão.
