Description

Colares wines are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let’s start with the vineyards, which are fully planted across “impressive” 15 hectares, a fact that already hints at the dynamism of this tiny region. An uncommon detail is that these vineyards have never been struck by the phylloxera scourge at the end of the 19th century, thanks to their sandy soils. Yet, Colares, despite these paradoxes, is a region in its own right that houses genuine wines full of character. They were among the most esteemed and sought-after wines of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Today we can still find those wines from those times in remarkably healthy condition, giving them unmatched longevity that is only possible in great wines. The main varieties are Ramisco for reds and Malvasia de Colares for whites. Both grapes, thanks to the exceptional maritime influence, bestow a unique singularity and character on these wines that deserve to be known. (illustrative image)
