The wines of Colares are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let’s begin with the vineyards, which cover a remarkable 15 hectares in total—already giving a glimpse of the dynamic nature of this tiny region. A noteworthy, uncommon feature is that these vines were never struck by the phylloxera plague of the late 19th century because they are planted on sandy soils. Yet Colares, amid these paradoxes, stands as a distinct region that produces genuine, character-filled wines. It was among the most esteemed and sought-after wines in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Even today, one can still find those wines from those eras in remarkable condition, granting them an exceptional longevity that only great wines can achieve. The primary varieties are Ramisco for reds and Colares Malvasia for whites. Both grapes, thanks to the exceptional maritime influence, bestow a unique singularity and character on these wines, making them worth discovering. (Illustrative image only)
