Description

Colares wines are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let’s start with the vineyard, which is completely planted across “impressive” 15 hectares, a fact alone hinting at the dynamics of this tiny region. Another uncommon feature is that these vines were never afflicted by the phylloxera plague of the late 19th century, thanks to their sandy soils. Yet, despite these paradoxes, Colares is a region in its own right, producing genuine, character-filled wines. They were among the most renowned and sought-after wines of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Even today you can find those vintage wines in remarkable condition, giving them an exceptional longevity that only great wines can achieve. The main grapes are Ramisco for reds and Malvasía de Colares for whites. Both varieties, thanks to the strong maritime influence, lend a unique singularity and character to these wines that deserve to be known. (Illustrative image only)
