This Monte Cascas Douro Grande Reserva certainly seems to have woken up with a burst of energy! Clearly, the winemakers favour a lengthy, cold maceration – seven days of skin contact in the tank – to really coax maximum flavour from the grapes, with those ripe blackberry notes immediately jumping out. The influence of one-to-two year old French oak then adds depth, layering in some lovely cereal and dark chocolate nuances – a true Douro classic. It’s a wine with plenty of weight and structure, and the impressive 17.5 points awarded by Grandes Escolhas certainly reflect its mineral complexity and long, satisfying finish. Would pair beautifully with a hearty beef roast, I’d imagine.
