Monte Meão Harvest Report The start of the 2020 Viticultural Year was very rainy. The cumulative precipitation from December to April was 420 mm, three times higher than in 2019. The humid and warm spring conditions prompted an advance of the vegetative cycle by about three weeks, and flowering was affected by occasional rains that interfered with cluster development. Summer was extremely dry and hot. On June 23 and 24, a rapid temperature rise caused widespread scorching in the Douro vineyards, with consequent effects on yield reduction. Several heatwaves in June and July further reduced production, falling 40 % compared to recent years’ averages. This drop was mainly due to Touriga Franca, the grape variety that suffered the most from the extreme conditions mentioned. Vinification The aim is a gentle extraction, so the grapes are not destemmed and are only partially crushed. Fermentation takes place in open‑top vats, with very little maceration, for ten days. The wine is then aged in 500‑liter used barrels for 16 months.
