The history of Favaios fades into the past. Its name comes from “Flávius,” an ancient Roman settlement that belonged to the land of Panoías, and its development has followed the dynasties. Since 1952, in the Demarcated Region of the Douro, the Cooperative Winehouse of Favaios has become one of the largest and most recognised in the country, particularly for the unmistakable quality of its Aperitivo and Moscatel de Favaios. Wine has played a huge role in the village’s economy and architecture, and to meet growing market demands and modernise its 1952‑era facilities, the cooperative now boasts over 550 members.
