At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region to pursue a cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 a traditional wine‑cellar and a distillery were built, the latter still producing Mouchão Aguardente today. Today the Herdade do Mouchão remains managed by the original family’s descendants, and the winemaking process remains virtually unchanged: hand‑harvested grapes, fermentation in stone vats, and foot‑pumping. These techniques and the estate’s long‑standing success make its wines feel like the ones of yesteryear. (illustrative image)
