In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region with the aim of working in the cork trade. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. The first vines on the estate were planted in 1901, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still produces Mouchão brandy today. Today, Herdade do Mouchão continues to be managed and worked by the descendants of the original family, and the winemaking process remains almost unchanged, preserving the traditional hand‑harvest and grape fermentation in stone troughs, with foot‑treading. It is these techniques and the whole success story of Herdade do Mouchão that keep this winery so close to the wines of the past. (Illustrative image)
