At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo with the aim of entering the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still today produces Mouchão aguardente. Today, Herdade do Mouchão is managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the entire vinification process remains virtually unchanged, preserving the traditional hand‑harvest and fermentation of grapes in stone vats, with foot‑pressing. These techniques and the whole success story of Herdade do Mouchão make the winery feel as close to the wines of old as possible.
