In the early nineteenth‑century Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo with the aim of a cork business. Three generations later his grandson, John Reynolds, acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still produces Aguardente Mouchão today. The estate remains in the hands of the original family’s descendants, and the entire winemaking process is essentially unchanged, preserving hand‑harvest and grape fermentation in stone vats, with foot‑paddling. These traditions and the estate’s success story keep Herdade do Mouchão’s wines close to the character of old‑world vintages. (Illustrative image only)
